Amicus

Amicus is the national database for registering dogs in Switzerland and is operated on behalf of the cantons. This platform guarantees seamless traceability of registered dogs. Dog owners can easily register their dogs, report a change of owner, or update their dog's data. The registration process begins as soon as a new dog owner registers with their municipality. They then receive their user credentials, which they need to access the Amicus database. This registration is especially important to ensure the welfare of dogs and to prevent the illegal import of sick or far too young dogs. To this end, puppies must be fitted with a microchip before being handed over, which is registered by the veterinarian before they are entered into Amicus.

A change of owner requires the careful confirmation of both parties in the user account. The database thus makes an important contribution to responsible dog ownership and enables the authorities to contact the rightful owners of runaway or abandoned dogs. In addition, Amicus supports dog owners who are moving abroad or wish to travel abroad with their dogs. In the event of a move, the change of address must be reported to the municipality immediately in order to keep the registration up to date. The database also fulfills legal reporting obligations in accordance with the Animal Disease Ordinance.

Amicus ensures that all legal aspects of dog ownership in Switzerland are complied with, such as the registration of dog owners and the correct identification of dogs. Amicus is therefore not only a tool for dog owners, but also a necessity for animal welfare law in Switzerland.
