Anyone who passes the practical test initially receives not the definitive licence but the probationary licence. This is valid for three years. During this time, traffic offences are handled more strictly – a serious violation can lead to an extension of the probation period or even revocation.
The WAB (further training) is the mandatory element during the probation period. Since the reform in 2020 it consists of just one course day (instead of two previously). The content covers driving dynamics, correct braking and evasion, recognising the limits of physics (grip, stopping distance), observation technique and self-critical reflection on one's own driving behaviour. Part of it often takes place on a closed practice area.
The WAB course must be completed within the three-year probation period. Anyone who does not attend in time loses their entitlement to the definitive licence until the further training is made up. After completing the WAB course and a probation period without objections, the unrestricted licence is issued without any further exam.
As a price guide, expect roughly CHF 250 to 400 for the WAB day (without guarantee, depending on the provider and whether a vehicle or catering is included). It is worth not putting the course off to the last moment – slots are in demand, and missing it has direct consequences for licence validity.
Important: the WAB is not an exam but a training and awareness day. It is aimed at all new drivers in categories A and B. Its goal is to reduce the accident risk in the statistically most dangerous first years of driving.
