What is E-bike vs. bicycle?
An e-bike is a bicycle with an electric motor and a battery that assists you while pedalling. In Switzerland there are two categories: the "slow" e-bikes with pedal assistance up to 25 km/h and the fast S-pedelecs, which assist up to 45 km/h. The classic bicycle has no motor and is therefore lighter, needs less maintenance and is cheaper to buy. An S-pedelec requires a yellow number plate, an operating licence and a helmet.
The assistance works via a sensor that measures your pedalling force and switches on the motor. How far you get on one battery charge depends on terrain, weight, riding style and assistance level. A classic bike goes as far as your fitness allows and is independent of charge level or power sockets.
An e-bike is especially worthwhile for hilly commutes, longer distances or when you want to arrive less sweaty. A classic bicycle suits short trips, training and anyone who wants a simple, robust ride.
When buying, check frame size and riding position, brakes (ideally hydraulic disc brakes on e-bikes because of the higher weight), battery quality and a good service network in your region. A common mistake is looking only at the price and forgetting follow-up costs such as battery replacement, servicing and insurance.
