What is Hair extensions?
With a hair extension, the hairdresser adds extra strands to your own hair. Usually real human hair is used (often labelled «Remy» hair, where the cuticle layer all runs in one direction), less commonly synthetic hair. The goal is either more length, more volume (thickening for fine hair) or both. The extensions are matched to your own hair in colour and texture so that the transition stays invisible.
The most common techniques differ in how they are attached and how long they last. With the bonding or keratin method, individual strands are fused near the roots using a heated keratin bond – durable but time-consuming. Micro-ring or micro-loop extensions are fixed with small metal rings without heat or glue, which is gentler. Tape extensions (tape-in) are thin wefts with adhesive strips that are quick to apply and reusable. With weaving/sew-in, a weft is stitched into braided natural hair. Clip-in extensions are the only type you put in and take out yourself each day – with no permanent bond.
The salon process starts with a consultation: hair density, hair structure and the condition of the scalp are assessed, and the right hair colour and quality are selected. Applying the extensions takes roughly 1.5 to 4 hours depending on the method and the desired fullness. Afterwards the extensions are cut into your own hair and textured so that a natural, soft blend is created – this cut is decisive for an inconspicuous result.
Extensions are suitable for most hair types, provided your own hair and scalp are healthy and there is enough root hair to attach to. For very fine or badly damaged hair, lighter methods (e.g. tape or micro-ring) are chosen to keep tension low. Care includes a mild, sulphate-free routine, avoiding oils and silicones at the attachment points, and regular, gentle brushing with a special extensions brush. Bonds and tapes need to be «moved up» (repositioned) every 6 to 12 weeks because your own hair grows out; the human-hair extensions themselves often last several months up to a year with good care.
Costs in Switzerland vary widely by method, amount of hair and hair quality. As rough guide values (without guarantee), tape extensions are often around CHF 300–800, bonding/keratin extensions roughly CHF 500–1500 and up depending on volume, with the human-hair material making up a large part of the price. On top of that come recurring costs for repositioning. If you want to compare prices, the CityHero hairdresser price comparison lists salons near you with their services.
