What is Bob?
The bob is one of the best-known haircuts of all and comes in numerous variations. In the classic bob, the hair ends at chin length and forms a straight, closed outline. In a layered bob, the top hair is cut slightly shorter, creating more movement and volume. The A-line bob (also called a graduated bob) is shorter at the back and longer towards the front, while the long bob – or "lob" – reaches just above the shoulders and is noticeably more everyday-friendly than a very short cut.
When cutting, the hairdresser usually works on dampened hair and first establishes the base length and outline. The individual sections are then precisely matched so that the cut meets cleanly all the way around. Depending on the desired effect, thinning or point-cutting techniques are used to remove weight. Finally, the hair is blow-dried and styled so the final shape becomes visible. An initial bob cut in a salon typically takes around 45 to 75 minutes, depending on hair density and effort.
In principle, the bob suits almost every hair type, provided the cut is adapted to the individual structure. Fine hair benefits from a straight, compact line because it visually creates fullness. Thick or curly hair is often lightly thinned so the shape does not become too voluminous. Face shape also plays a role: an A-line bob elongates rounder faces, while a bob with a fringe can balance strong features. A good consultation in the salon clarifies in advance which variation fits the hair and daily routine.
To keep its clean shape, a bob needs regular trimming – usually every four to eight weeks, since even a few centimetres of regrowth change the outline. In everyday life the cut is comparatively easy to maintain: a blow-dryer and a round brush are enough for the typical shape, straight versions benefit from a flat iron, and wavy ones from a curling iron or texture spray. Heat protection before styling helps preserve the hair. Anyone wanting to keep the contour sharp should keep to regular appointments.
As a rough Swiss guide value, a women's bob including wash, cut and blow-dry costs roughly between CHF 60 and CHF 130 depending on region and salon, and more in upmarket salons. A simple retrim can be cheaper. These figures are non-binding guide values without guarantee – actual prices differ by salon, hair length and additional services. Comparing prices is worthwhile because the range between individual businesses can be considerable.
