What is External venetian blinds?
The Raffstore is one of the most popular exterior sun-shading systems in Switzerland. Because it sits in front of the glass, it blocks solar heat before it even reaches the window – far more effective against overheating than an interior curtain or blind. The slats are usually made of coated aluminium and come in various profiles (C- or Z-shaped) and colours.
Today a Raffstore is almost always operated electrically via a motor, often with a switch, remote control or smart-home integration. The tilt angle of the slats controls how much daylight enters: nearly closed for glare protection at a screen, slightly open for soft light while keeping a clear view outside. Many systems retract automatically in wind to prevent damage.
A Raffstore is needed wherever rooms should not overheat in summer – in new buildings it is often planned in from the start, while in renovations it is retrofitted as a surface-mounted or built-on box. It is especially worthwhile on south- and west-facing façades and on large glass surfaces.
Look for wind-stable slats with guide rails (not just cable guides), a quiet brand-name motor, a clean plastered-in or surface-mounted solution, and check cantonal rules on façade changes. Common mistakes: under-dimensioned wind sensors, cheap motors and installation without proper sealing.
