Home battery storage

A home battery storage system is a rechargeable battery for the household that stores surplus electricity – usually from your own solar (photovoltaic) system – and releases it later when little or no solar power is being produced. This lets you use your self-generated electricity in the evening and at night instead of feeding it into the grid.

At its core, a home battery consists of battery cells (today mostly lithium-ion, often the safe lithium iron phosphate/LFP type), a battery management system for monitoring, and an inverter that converts the battery's direct current into usable alternating current. The system is typically integrated between the PV array and the house distribution board and can usually be monitored via an app.

In everyday use it works like this: during the day the solar system first covers household consumption, then charges the battery; once it is full, the surplus goes to the grid. In the evening and at night the storage covers demand before any power is drawn from the grid. This significantly increases self-consumption, making you less dependent on grid prices and feed-in tariffs.

A battery makes most sense for households with their own PV system, high evening and night-time consumption (for example with a heat pump or an electric car), or a desire for greater self-sufficiency. Without a solar system it usually only pays off in special cases.

Pay attention to the right size (an oversized battery is expensive and rarely fully used), to warranty and cycle life, to professional installation by licensed electricians, and to any backup-power function. Common mistakes are oversizing and poor coordination with the inverter and PV system.

A family in a detached house in Aargau has a rooftop photovoltaic system and charges their electric car in the evening. During the day the system produces more power than is needed – until now this surplus flowed into the grid at a low tariff. With a battery, the midday sun is now stored and covers cooking, lighting and part of the car charging in the evening. As a result, the family draws far less expensive electricity from the grid.

Is a home battery worth it without a photovoltaic system?

In most cases, no. The main benefit comes from storing self-generated solar power. Without a PV system the battery would have to be charged with grid electricity, which only pays off in special cases – for example with very large day-night tariff differences or as a backup-power solution.

How large should the battery be?

The right size depends on your electricity consumption, the size of the PV system and your usage patterns (e.g. heat pump, electric car). As a rule of thumb, the storage is sized to cover evening and night-time demand. An oversized battery is expensive and rarely fully used – a specialist should size it based on your real consumption data.

Will I still have power during a blackout with a battery?

Only if the system explicitly has a backup or emergency power function. Many standard batteries also shut down during a grid outage for safety reasons. If security of supply matters to you, clarify this function explicitly with the installer before buying.
