The Health Directorate of the Canton of Zurich ensures comprehensive, high-quality health care for the population. It is responsible for the regulation-compliant provision of medicinal products, for ensuring the quality of food, as well as for monitoring and ensuring hygienic conditions in the handling of food. In addition, the Health Directorate is active in the prevention of animal epidemics and pandemics. The Health Directorate operates through several offices and specialist areas, each responsible for different tasks. These include, among others, the Cantonal Ethics Committee, which deals with questions concerning human research and patient safety. The Veterinary Office is also housed under its roof and takes care of animal welfare as well as the control of animal epidemics. In the Cantonal Laboratory, various tests are carried out concerning food, chemicals, and drinking water to ensure the safety and quality of products.

Another essential area of responsibility is the Cantonal Medicinal Products Control, which monitors the quality of pharmaceuticals and medical devices. The General Secretariat of this institution works to shape cooperation and financing within the health care system responsibly.
