Dental prophylaxis

Dental prophylaxis – commonly called «professional teeth cleaning» – is a preventive dental treatment that removes plaque, tartar and stains you cannot reach at home with a toothbrush and floss. Its goal is to prevent cavities, gum inflammation and periodontitis before they develop.

Prophylaxis refers to all preventive measures that keep teeth and gums healthy over the long term. At its core is professional dental hygiene, usually carried out by a trained dental hygienist or prophylaxis assistant – not necessarily by the dentist personally.

The procedure follows a clear pattern: first the teeth are examined and deposits are made visible, then hard tartar and soft plaque are removed with hand instruments or ultrasound, including between the teeth and along the gum line. The teeth are then polished and often treated with fluoride. Finally, you receive advice on the correct brushing technique and home care.

Prophylaxis is generally recommended once or twice a year; a shorter interval can make sense if you have gum problems, implants, braces or if you smoke. The specialist determines the right rhythm individually for you.

When choosing a provider, look for qualified staff, a thorough examination rather than a mere «polish», and a transparent cost breakdown – prices depend on the effort involved, time required and region, and are usually billed in CHF per unit of time. A common mistake is to see prophylaxis as purely cosmetic. In reality it is prevention that helps avoid expensive follow-up treatments.

Example

A 38-year-old office worker from Winterthur notices slight gum bleeding while brushing. At her six-monthly dental hygiene appointment, the hygienist removes tartar on the inner side of the lower front teeth, polishes everything and shows her how to clean between the teeth with interdental brushes. By her next visit the bleeding has stopped – a more serious periodontitis treatment was avoided this way.

Frequently asked

How often should you go for prophylaxis?

For most adults, once or twice a year is enough. If you have gum inflammation, periodontitis, implants, braces or if you smoke, a shorter interval can make sense. Your hygienist or dentist will set the right interval based on your individual risk.

Does professional teeth cleaning hurt?

The treatment is usually comfortable and painless. It can feel sensitive if a lot of tartar has to be removed or if the gums are already inflamed. For very sensitive teeth the area can be locally numbed on request – just mention it beforehand.

Does health insurance cover prophylaxis?

In Switzerland, dental services such as dental hygiene are normally not covered by basic insurance. Some supplementary policies contribute a share of the cost. Check your policy and ask for a transparent cost estimate in CHF in advance.
