Microneedling

Microneedling is a cosmetic treatment in which fine needles create countless tiny channels in the skin to stimulate the body's own collagen and elastin production. The aim is a smoother complexion, reduced scars and fine lines, and firmer skin.

In microneedling a device with many fine needles – a motorised pen or a roller (dermaroller) – is guided across the skin. The tiny, controlled micro-injuries trigger natural wound healing, prompting the body to produce more collagen and elastin. This cosmetic form (collagen induction therapy) mostly uses needle depths of 0.25 to 1.5 millimetres; greater depths are reserved for medical professionals. Active serums such as hyaluronic acid are often worked in during or after treatment, as the channels improve absorption.

The process begins with cleansing and a numbing cream that acts for 20 to 30 minutes. The needling itself takes 20 to 40 minutes. Afterwards the skin is red like a mild sunburn, usually settling within one to three days. During this time sun protection, no make-up on treatment day and gentle care are important. Visible results don't appear immediately but over weeks, because collagen build-up takes time.

Microneedling suits large pores, acne scars, fine lines, uneven texture and early skin laxity. Several sessions four to six weeks apart are usually needed – often a course of three to six treatments. It is unsuitable with active acne, inflammation, eczema or herpes in the treatment area. Hygiene and sterile single-use needle modules are mandatory.

In Switzerland a microneedling session in a beauty studio usually costs CHF 150 to 300 per treatment, depending on the area and serums used (no guarantee). Course packages of several sessions are often discounted. Medical needling with greater needle depth costs more and belongs in a doctor's hands.

Example

A client with fine acne scars on her cheeks books a course of four microneedling sessions five weeks apart. After the third session the skin looks more even and the scars flatter, because new collagen has formed.

Frequently asked

How many treatments do I need?

For visible results usually three to six sessions four to six weeks apart are needed, because collagen builds slowly. For acne scars more sessions may make sense. Afterwards one to two refreshers per year maintain the result.

Does microneedling hurt and how long is the downtime?

Thanks to numbing cream the pain is minimal, often just a tingling or scratching. The skin is red for one to three days afterwards, similar to a mild sunburn. During this time sun protection and gentle care matter, then you're presentable again.

What is the difference between pen and dermaroller?

The motorised pen punctures vertically with adjustable depth and is more precise, especially around contours like the nose and eyes. The dermaroller rolls at an angle across the skin, is cheaper but less even. Studios mostly use the pen with a sterile single-use module.
