With a nail enhancement the natural nail is either only reinforced or extended using a form or tip. There are two main systems: gel cures under UV or LED light and is low-odour, while acrylic is mixed from powder and liquid, hardens in the air and is especially strong. Both can be shaped into almost any form – from natural oval to square, stiletto or ballerina.
The process starts by prepping the natural nail: pushing back cuticles, buffing, degreasing. The material is then applied, sculpted and filed into shape, often followed by colour, French or nail art. A full new set takes 1.5 to 3 hours depending on effort and design. As the natural nail grows, a visible gap appears at the cuticle after two to four weeks – then a refill is done, re-sculpting the regrown area.
Enhancements suit anyone wanting to stabilise or extend brittle, thin or short nails, and elaborate designs that wouldn't hold on the natural nail. Regular refills every three to four weeks and proper removal by filing or soaking are essential – never pry them off, as this damages the natural nail. After long-term wear a care break is advisable.
In Switzerland a new set usually costs CHF 80 to 130, a refill CHF 55 to 90, depending on studio, length and design (no guarantee). Elaborate nail art, gems or French can raise the price. Removal alone is often CHF 20 to 40.
