The practical test for category B lasts around 45 to 60 minutes. The examiner sits in the passenger seat and has you drive through various traffic situations: in town, out of town, often on the motorway, plus manoeuvres such as parking, turning, reversing and safely pulling away on a hill. Vehicle control, observation, adapting to traffic, consideration and anticipatory, fuel-efficient driving are assessed.
Only those who meet the requirements are admitted: a valid learner's permit, a completed VKU and – if the learner's permit was obtained before the 20th birthday – the required minimum learning period of 12 months. The test usually takes place in the driving school's car; the vehicle must be roadworthy and fitted with dual pedals.
The process: you meet the examiner, often followed by a short check (e.g. controls, visibility). Then you drive a route set by the examiner. Minor mistakes do not automatically mean failure; what counts is the overall picture and whether a dangerous situation arises. A serious mistake causing danger, however, can lead to immediate termination.
As a price guide, the exam fee is roughly CHF 120 to 160 (without guarantee, varies by canton). There are often additional costs for renting the driving school car and the instructor's presence during the test. If you fail, a retake is possible after a waiting period – each attempt costs again, which is why solid preparation with enough lessons is the cheapest route.
After passing, you do not receive a definitive licence but the probationary licence for three years. Only after the further training (WAB) and a probation period without objections does the unrestricted licence follow.
