During a major service the garage works through a manufacturer-specific checklist. Standard items are an engine oil and oil filter change, replacement of the air, cabin (pollen) and, depending on the model, fuel filter, checking or replacing the spark plugs, plus inspection of brakes, suspension, exhaust, drive belt, battery and lighting. In addition, brake fluid, coolant and washer fluid are checked and topped up or replaced as needed.
The scope follows the manufacturer's service plan, usually tied to mileage or time – typically every 15,000 to 30,000 km or once a year. Many modern cars show a due service via the service indicator in the dashboard. A major service often falls at every second maintenance interval; in between, a small service (essentially an oil change and visual check) is enough.
A major service usually takes 2 to 4 hours. It is important that the garage documents the work carried out in the service booklet or digitally – this preserves resale value and is mandatory for cars under warranty so the factory warranty stays valid.
As a guideline (no guarantee): a small oil service costs about CHF 200–400, a major service roughly CHF 400–900 depending on the vehicle and parts required. Premium or diesel models with an extra fuel filter or special long-life oil tend to be higher. Independent garages are often cheaper than brand dealerships, yet – thanks to EU/warranty rules – must not endanger the manufacturer's warranty as long as they work to specification.
