The Office for Building Construction (AHB) is the central client representation of the City of Zürich and stands for a sustainable and future-oriented approach to construction. The main task of the AHB is to plan and realize building construction projects that follow the principle of sustainability, with the goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2035. Through well-founded concepts and strict norms and standards, the office supports responsible planning that takes both ecological and social aspects into account.

The AHB is involved in various services, ranging from strategic planning and feasibility studies to idea and architecture competitions. More than 6,000 city-owned buildings fall within the office's remit. Each year, over 650 million francs are invested in construction ventures that support not only social housing but also the cultural development of the city. One example of the diverse projects is the support of art in construction, which aims to connect art and architecture and to create added value for the public.

Another central point is project management: the AHB takes responsibility for the entire design and realization of municipal construction ventures. This includes tender and invoice review in order to ensure transparency and efficiency. In addition, the office conducts numerous architecture competitions and planner selection procedures, comprising up to 50 competitions each year, in order to find the best ideas for the city's architecture.

With a dedicated team of over 220 employees, 60% of whom work part-time, the AHB strives to make a positive contribution to the urban development of Zürich through innovative solutions and an inclusive approach. The AHB regularly informs the public about current projects and developments and promotes exchange between various stakeholder groups.
