Finanzdirektion des Kantons Zürich

The Finanzdirektion des Kantons Zürich (Finance Directorate of the Canton of Zürich) plays a central role in the administration and management of the cantonal finances. Under the leadership of Government Councilor Ernst Stocker, the directorate aims to ensure sound public finances and to promote a moderate tax burden for the population and the economy. These two goals are decisive for creating optimal living conditions in the Canton of Zürich and support strong and sustainable financial management. The Finance Directorate deals with a variety of cross-cutting tasks, covering, among others, the areas of finance, taxes, human resources, and IT. It ensures that the administration works efficiently and that the financial decisions of the Government Council are prepared appropriately.

The tasks of the Finance Directorate include the planning and management of administrative activities, the provision of services, and the support of the various offices in the canton. This includes financial planning and tax policy, which are essential in order to secure the financial stability of the region. In addition, the Finance Directorate employs around 1,200 staff, most of whom work in the tax office. Particular attention is paid to the digital transformation within the administration, which is scheduled to be fully completed by the beginning of 2027. This includes electronic invoice processing as well as the use of modern information and communication technologies in order to optimize services.

The Finance Directorate also has special tasks such as the provision of insurance services and the administration of the charitable fund. This makes it possible to support social projects and developments in mountain regions as well as in development cooperation. Through these comprehensive measures and areas of responsibility, the Finance Directorate of the Canton of Zürich is perceived as a stabilizing factor in the region's economic and social policy. Sustainable financial policy can thus be highlighted as one of the strengths of the cantonal administration.
