The training is divided into two main parts: the theoretical and the practical exam. The theory exam takes place in Oberrieden at the shipping-control office, where participants learn the necessary knowledge about maritime law, weather, and safety regulations. The practical exam takes place in an agile training boat, a Bella 580 Cabine, which has classic handling characteristics. Registration for the practical exam usually takes place after successfully completing the theory training. Between theory and practice there is a waiting period of about 3 to 6 weeks, during which students have time to deepen their skills on the water.
