The Laboratory of Hydraulics, Hydrology and Glaciology (VAW) at ETH Zürich is dedicated to research in the fields of hydraulic engineering, river engineering, glaciological processes, as well as numerical fluid and morphodynamics. Its main task includes the study and optimization of water resources, glaciers, and innovative hydraulic engineering infrastructure. The VAW is committed to providing clean and renewable energy, developing flood protection measures, and promoting the renaturation of rivers. In addition, research is conducted on improving safety against glacier hazards. The river engineering division focuses on the revitalization of watercourses as well as flood protection, while glaciology analyzes the long-term and short-term dynamics of glaciers using advanced measurement technology and model simulations.
