NCCR Digital Fabrication

The National Center of Competence in Research (NCCR) Digital Fabrication, launched in 2014, pursues the goal of revolutionizing architecture through the seamless connection of digital technologies and physical building processes. Over 60 researchers from six different academic disciplines work together to develop groundbreaking technologies for the construction of tomorrow. This research enables Switzerland to take a leading role in the global field of digital fabrication. The NCCR Digital Fabrication is the first NCCR to focus on architecture and construction and is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). It was initiated at ETH Zurich and cooperates with EPF Lausanne, the University of Applied Sciences Rapperswil, the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences as well as the Bern University of Applied Sciences and Empa.

The focal points of the research include digital timber and concrete constructions as well as digital building processes and collaboration. The NCCR also places great value on the gap between the digital and physical worlds, by exploring interfaces between these areas in order to create innovative solutions that are both efficient and sustainable. The NCCR additionally promotes education and industry engagement in order to put research results into practice. Workshops, symposia and open events are part of the program in order to raise awareness of digital fabrication technologies and to foster exchange between science, industry and the public.
