About Berntor

The Berntor is a historic structure in the town of Murten, first mentioned in 1239. During the famous Battle of Murten, the gate was completely destroyed. Over the centuries it was rebuilt several times, until it finally took on a new form in the second half of the 18th century. The master builder responsible for its renewal was named Niklaus Hebler. He is known for his renovation of the Bern clock tower.

A special feature of the Berntor is the impressive clockwork, made in the workshops of the Ducommun brothers in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1712. This mechanical clock has a remarkable mode of operation: the three weight stones, which consisted of cannonballs used in the Battle of Murten, must be wound up by hand every day. Notably, the clock face has only one hand, the hour hand, designed as an oath-taking hand. This detail symbolizes Murten's status as a free imperial city.

Today, the Berntor stands not only for Murten's rich historical roots but also for the rich culture and heritage that shape the region. Every year it attracts many visitors who want to learn more about the history and architecture of this historic structure. The surroundings of the Berntor as well as the old town of Murten offer numerous opportunities for exploration and experiences, making it a central point for tourists and history enthusiasts. In addition, the region is known for its diverse landscape and countless leisure opportunities.
