About Gifthüttli

The Gifthüttli is one of the most tradition-rich and best-known restaurants in Basel, conveying an authentic Basel 'Beiz' atmosphere through its wooden interior and numerous ornamentations. The history of the Gifthüttli reaches back about 120 years, to a time when Basel taverns served only wine and beer was mainly served in home breweries. Innocenz Weiss, the operator of the guesthouse 'zum Ritter St. Georg', dared to serve beer alongside wine, which led to his venue being renamed 'Gifthüttli' – a name that has since been inseparably linked with the history and culture of the city.

Today, the Gifthüttli is famous for its juicy Cordon Bleu in numerous variations and offers a multilingual menu (Basel German, standard German, French, and English) that reflects its international clientele. Many guests reserve months in advance to make sure they can dine at the Gifthüttli during their visit to Basel. Alongside the delicious dishes, the restaurant also offers a pleasant ambiance, where traditional dishes are carefully prepared and guests can enjoy a large selection of Cordon Bleu and other Swiss dishes, including gluten-free variations.
